"mhdeer," 3/31/2005
Enter your message here. If the University of Illinois want to honor someone from their area. President Abraham Lincoln was a famous Illinois resident, practiced law there before he became president, Why not honor him? Have a college student walk around on stilts wearing a long black coat with a tall hat. I think that is appropriate to honor him. All the indigeneous Indian tribes that were originally from the Illinois area were either massacred or moved to other areas. Why honor a "Chief" who was regarded as a savage and killed. I think it would be much more prestigious to honor a past president.

"A Manca, '90," 3/31/2005

"Wanitu wakuwa," 3/30/2005
I am of Nakota, Dakota, Lakota Oyate, I find the Chief to be very offensive ... To me the eagle feathers are as sacred as the cross is to a Christian ... I would NEVER dishonor anothers religion as I believe each others religions and lifeways should be honored and respected ... I'll pray for a healthy respectful solution for all thos involved in this issue ... [more]

Bill McCall, Mar. 24, 2005

"A proud Dakota woman," Mar. 21, 2005
After reading through some of the comments on this page, it saddens me the amount of hate that truly resonates from people's comments. The emails speak for themselves on the blatant racism from these pro-chief comments ... they resort to ridicule, mockery and disdain to a people they "say" they are only honoring. [more]

Jeff R., Mar. 19, 2005
I found one of my own top 10 lists to give to you. Think about how stupid these questions sound and then ponder why we are asked similar questions on a daily basis. This is just a tiny glimpse into how mainstream America has attempted to turned American Indians into a novelty ... [more]

"TrybaL," Mar. 17, 2005
When I was at the last 'band day' at U of I ... it was fun, but when the chief came out after we played, I was literally about to go tackle him ... why must you incorporate our faces into sports? [more]

Waubanokwe, Sep. 24, 2004
People who are pro for the "honor" of the Indians, refer to Chief Illini's charades as a tribute and memorial to our state's Indian heritage ... I am native and a graduate of the U of I ... I am ashamed of this school for trying to preserve the honor of the Native American and their ceremonies... [more]

Anonymous, Sep. 23, 2004
Would trading in the Fighting Illini and the chief for the Fighting Clergymen and the pope be something [chief supporters] would feel good about? They could have some college student dress in an outfit that resembles that of the the pope and perhaps perform a little mass at half-time ... [more]

Aly, Sep. 21, 2004
Any fool could look around and realize American Indians aren't running around in moccasins, wearing headdresses and yelling out battle cries. They're regular people ... this mascot is demeaning a culture and a people. [more]

T. Garza, Dec. 2003

I was wrong. Once I got here, odd things began to happen. In class, I self-identified myself as Pueblo Indian. The response was always "what do you think about the mascot?"
